Course objectives: This module aims to provide a general introduction to wood and non-timber forest products (NTFPs). The module is intended for those with no previous experience in the forest products area.
Course contents: Wood. An introduction to: wood anatomy; wood decay; processing of round wood (sawmilling, timber drying and preservation); technologies of the board and pulp and paper industries; wood extractives and their utilisation; the structural use of timber. NTFPs. Classification of NTFPs and their significance to people. Case studies of global products, including: bamboo and rattans; medicinal plants; mosses; mushrooms; animal products.
Teaching and learning methods: 10 ´ 2-hour lectures (20 hours); 10 ´ 1-hour tutorials (10 hours); total 30 hours.
Examination: Essay (50 % of module marks); end of module "unseen" test (50 % of module marks)
Competences acquired: On completion of this module students will have gained an understanding of the main technologies and issues associated with the production of wood-based and non-timber forest products.
