Course objectives: To develop students’ understanding of the objectives and constraints influencing management, past, present and future, of natural forest and plantations in tropical regions, with an emphasis on silviculture of secondary forests and restoration of degraded forests.
Course contents: Objectives and constraints influencing tropical forest management; biodiversity; resources assessment; yield models; harvesting prescriptions; choice of systems; past, present and future natural silvicultural systems; plantations; secondary forest and forest restoration; vulnerable environments; balanced and mixed systems; case studies.
Teaching and learning methods: 17 ´ 2-hour lectures (34 hours); 1 ´ 2-hour tutorial (2 hours); total 36 hours.
Examination: Presentation (25 % of module marks); end-of-module examination (75 % of module marks).
Competences acquired: By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the principal systems of tropical forest management and silviculture, and understanding of the factors influencing them.
