Course objectives: The emphasis of the field trip will be on social and environmental aspects of forestry. Visits will be hosted by public and private sector owners and organisations, who will discuss their objectives and management practices with students.
Course contents: In 2007/08 the field trip will be based in Oxford, in the south of England. Students will visit the Northmoor Trust, the National Forest, Forest Research (Alice Holt), the New Forest and Westonbirt Arboretum.
Teaching and learning methods: 5 ´ 8-hour field trips (40 hours), plus travelling time to and from Oxford (10 hours); total 50 hours .
Examination: Report (100 % of module marks) on a topic discussed during the trip. The report should include information gathered during the trip and a literature review on the chosen topic. Students must choose a topic that is different from the topic of their dissertation.
Competences acquired: By the end of the module students should be able to discuss the multi-dimensional complexities of forest management in the countryside, especially for social and environmental objectives.
