Module 11 A (choice between 11a and 11 B): Tropical Soils, Soil Degradation and Rehabilitation

Contents: Subsequent to the introduction in the soil-forming substrates and processes the principles of the international soil classification WRB (World Reference Base) are outlined, and the evolution, distribution and utilization potentials of the soil classes are explained. The methodology for regionalisation of the soil information and  soil information systems are dealt with. The historical development of soil degradation, the causes of which and the regional differentiation, as well as  the intensity classes of which are elucidated and deepened by case studies. These are pilot studies in climatically representative regions as well as country-specific reports on experiences. Field trips and exercises serve to demonstrate the classification of soil degradation. Based on the reasons for and classes of the degradation physical, chemical and biological rehabilitation methods are outlined and simulated using case studies.

Goals of qualification: The student acquires special knowledge of forms, distribution and functionality of soils in the tropics, of causes and their intensity of posing risks for the soil. He gets to know methods of region and site-specific measures of soil rehabilitation using case studies from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The student is able to independently and by using the available sources to assess soils and their condition, as well as to derive methods for rehabilitation and site-adequate, sustainable management.

The module examination consists of the project work (30 hours) and the written test (90 minutes).
