Course objectives: Provide tools for the quantitative assessment of tree stands with emphasis on specificities of the tropical context; improve student’s skill in data analysis and building of biomass models.
Course contents: Lectures: (1) dendrometry: main quantitative parameters of tree and tree stand forms and volume; assessment techniques and tools; building volume tables; production and potentialities of tree populations. (2) Inventory: inventory types and sampling with emphasis on case studies. Full inventory projects based on a Mediterranean forest and including methodology building, data collecting and analysis and report writing are managed by students (group work) from methodological conception to report writing.
Teaching and learning methods: Lectures (18 h). Inventory fieldwork project (30 h).
Examination: Individual examination and collective project group rating.
Competences acquired: Mastering of dendrometric tools (measure and data analysis); experience of implementing a quantitative assessment project of a forest stand.
