Elective: Forest economics in developing countries

Course objectives: (1) provide knowledge on economic contexts within which managers of forest forests work and must master; (2) develop ability to use tools and methods to deal with economic problems.

Course contents: Economics. Where are forest products going? Channels of timber woods on national and international markets and of fire wood (self consumption and informal trade). Mechanisms reducing value of wood from forests of developing countries, and consequences on sustainable management. Identification of economic opportunities of silviculture from cost-benefit analysis of forest management. Appraisal of benefits of plantations and evaluation of project management from time valuation based calculation techniques.

Teaching and learning methods: Current debates on tropical forests economy are exposed and debated with students. Fundamental concepts and methods for the analysis are discussed and applied to case studies during collective work. The principal lecturer‘s book, articles and bibliographic notes are distributed.

Examination: individual evaluation: involvement and exercises during the course (50%); written examination (50%).

Competences acquired: By the end of the module students should be able to demonstrate ability to: (1) understand world markets and forest products trade; (2) use tools of micro-economic calculation.
